In light of The Hobbit premiere, Air New Zealand and some of The Hobbit cast and crew have joined teams to offer flight passengers an enjoyable alternative to the mind-numbing airline safety spiel. Favorites such as Elijah Wood, Sylvester McCoy and the man behind the legendary films, Sir Peter Jackson, make cameo appearances while explaining the do’s and don’ts of aircraft passenger protocol.
Not only does this video serve a practical purpose but it also acts as a great advertisement for Air New Zealnd with the possibility of limitless exposure on social media. The video is whimsical but thoughtful and exemplifies Air New Zealand’s interest in their clientele. This is what garners customer satisfaction and loyalty. Make a few cuts here and there and it could even be a fun television ad.
It is also a great way to promote the upcoming Hobbit movie which premieres in December. What better way to set the stage for an approaching film than by engaging an audience that has no where to go.
And if you were to boil the video down to its true goal (getting people to actually pay attention to airline safety instructions) then mission accomplished.
In just one day, the video had over 1 million views and more than 12 thousand of Siskel and Ebert’s famous “thumbs up” on YouTube. The video comes accompanied by a hashtag, #AirNZHobbit, making it an ideal outlet for engagement.
Check out the video. No need to be a Hobbit expert to enjoy it.
And for true Hobbit and New Zealand enthusiasts, here are the predecessors to what Air New Zealand is calling “the most epic safety video ever”. Don’t forget to map your flight on the Middle-earth inspired flight map on Air New Zealand’s YouTube page.
