Car giant Audi has used the hype surrounding the release of the new Star Trek film by releasing an ad featuring ‘old’ Spock, Leonard Nimoy, against the new Spock, Zachary Quinto.
In the ad, Nimoy, who played the pointy-eared Vulcan for two decades in the original series, teaches Quinto how to play chess before the young pretender ups the stakes and challenges Nimoy to a round of golf.
“Whoever gets to the club last buys lunch,” he says.
Quinto jumps into his Audi and makes it to the club in no time, while Nimoy is held up attempting to fit the golf bag in his vehicle (a Mercedes). The viewer is then subjected to a sing-along of Nimoy’s tune “The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins,” which he released on his second album in the late 1960s.
When he finally arrives at the gold club, the older Spock hides his shame by reeling out the famous quote from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, “I have been and always shall be your friend.”
Nimoy gets the last laugh by downing Quinto with trademark Vulcan nerve pinch, before stating that as Quinto hadn’t actually made it inside the golf club, he would have to buy lunch.
